Top Ten USA Walks - DC National Zoo
|
The DC National Zoo/National Cathedral Walk #552 was voted one of the Top Ten Walks in the USA by the clubs of the American Volkssport Association.
Voting history:
2000: #8
2002: #7
This year-round self-guided walk tours past the Washington National Cathedral and its lovely Bishop's Garden, designed by Frederic Law Olmstead who designed New York's Central Park (also a Top Ten Walk). Then on to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. Pets are not allowed in either the Cathedral or the Zoo. The 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) is rated an easy/moderate difficulty, mostly on paved surfaces.
It is one of three walks that start at the McDonalds, 2616 Connecticut Avenue., NW, Washington, DC 20008. Another Top Ten Walk, the Georgetown Walk, also starts there, as well as a walk featuring Embassy Row and the National Cathedral.
To get there, you can take the Metro subway Red Line to Woodley Park-Zoo / Adams Morgan Station. The cafe is across the street from the Metro Stop.
Plan your walk also around the hours the Zoo is open: 9am - 4:30pm October to April; 9am - 6pm May to September.
Changes with start points can occur suddenly, so you may wish to check with the club beforehand, contact Ed Branges 301-340-9418 or ebran@webtv.net
To enjoy the walk, sign up in the log in the start box and take a map. As always, allow the staff of the deli to deal with regular customers before asking them questions, and please consider buying your meals or snacks there.
