Cedar Hills Walk, Oregon
Cedar Milers Volkssport Club by Wendy BumgardnerThe Cedar Milers club has several year-round walking events in this area. Year-Round Events are routes laid out by local walking clubs for walkers to enjoy at their convenience. The clubs of the American Volkssport Association have over 1000 of these established nationwide. Walkers arrive at the start point, register in the log, take a map and enjoy the trail. They may also purchase an award for the event and earn credit towards milestone achievement awards through the AVA/IVV.
The club had a pleasant entry and the info gal knew where the start box was, a podium which contained the sign-in log and maps. My three friends and I signed in and took the excellent map and directions. The route winds mostly through the neighborhoods, which have retained some rural character. The streets lack sidewalks but there is little traffic. Donna grew up in this neighborhood also. The route is rated moderate and has a few hills but is not at all difficults. The walk goes up to the Cedar Hills transit skybridge over Hwy. 26. This is closed on the weekend, so we continued on to the small strip mall and used the restrooms we knew were in the basement.
The trail now goes downhill for a long stretch and passes Roxbury Park. There are squirrels out today all along the route. The weather continues to be pleasant, dry and warm but cloudy. The route crosses busy Walker Road and does a small loop before coming back up and crossing Walker Road again.
We pass a lovely brick home that sports seven garage doors and my friends know it is the home of pro basketball player Kevin Duckworth, tucked back in next to the grade school amid towering trees. We return to the club and finish up.
The walk is available daily except holidays, 6 am - 11 pm. A second route of easier difficulty is also available from the same start point. A very nice Sunday stroll and a good route for quiet walking.
