Photo Gallery - 2003 New York City Avon Walk for Breast Cancer |
With some music and a brief speech, we are off! It is about 7 am and our path begins at the southern tip of Manhattan at the South Street Seaport Pier 17. We head into the Financial District
Our street crossings for the 2000+ walkers is eased by our motor patrol and New York City's Finest. A sea of pink and white shirted walkers heads up Wall Street. This is one of the very few congested portions of the route for the whole weekend. I started in about the middle of the pack.
Our route took us to Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Center, to pay our respects.
During my only previous visit to New York City, I did not make it to lower Manhattan and so I never saw the World Trade Center towers in person. It is unbelievable to stand here and think of the horrors of September 11. As I passed each doorway in the surrounding area I thought of how people must have sought shelter there as the buildings collapsed. Life is precious, we must not waste our time on earth with grudges and nursing petty hurts. On both my visit in 2000 and today in 2003, I experienced friendly and welcoming treatment from everyone in New York City. While Sept. 11 and the recent blackout may have brought out the very best in New Yorkers, they had it in their hearts all along - at least in how they respond to a country bumpkin from Oregon!
