Photo Gallery - 2003 New York City Avon Walk for Breast Cancer |
The 2003 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York City, Sept. 21-22 saw over 2000 walkers enjoy circling the island of Manhattan and visiting the Bronx and Brooklyn. The walk presented initial checks totaling $1 million to breast cancer detection programs and research programs. I participated as a walker and raised about $2800.
The walk began at South Street Seaport, Pier 17, at 6:30 am. Here I am on the right, with another walker. There was some problem and the promised shuttle buses did not arrive to take us from the Sheraton Hotel and Towers to the pier, but it being New York we easily filled up taxis with hundreds of waiting walkers and their gear and got to the start well ahead of time.
Walkers stretch, have the breakfast provided, and await the dawn. I had the Oatmeal Breakfast Square and the orange juice and coffee, getting a few carbs in to support my long walking day.
The Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge as dawn breaks. Tomorrow we will cross both of those bridges before finishing. It is a warm morning, about 70F and humid for me. I am very comfortable in my shorts and wicking t-shirt. I carry a fanny pack with my camera, water bottle, a Patagonia Dragonfly jacket I won't need, some blister care supplies, my wallet, cell phone, and a Buff.
