| Day Three - Avon 3-Day Walk |
George
is a special cheerer along the way. He shows up several times each day
along the route, each time wearing a different college t-shirt. Sunday was
"Hug George" day as walkers broke their normally orderly progression
to mob George and get photos. Thanks for your cheering and smiling face,
George!
We entered the Capital Crescent Trail, sharing it with bikers and runners and other ordinary folks out to enjoy a lovely Sunday. I loved the woodsy portions of each day, and admit I prefer the ones with asphalt paths (the better to racewalk) than the truly natural trail (the better to trip).
After
the trail, we came at last into Washington DC. The folks ahead of me
peeled off to take photos of the sign, but I didn't - sorry! My little
feet were "headed for the barn" and weren't about to be detoured to
take a picture of a mediocre sign. Walking through Georgetown, others
noted that nobody was coming out to cheer us on. Even the
happy-but-obnoxious car honking had ceased.
As I rounded a corner just
after the final Grab and Go at mile 11.91,
I
could see the Washington Monument poking up behind the Watergate
apartments. Wow! We'll be there soon! We walked along the Potomac,
barely exciting the diners out on the restaurant terraces, watching the rowers
on the river.
