Definition: A condition where the muscles swell against the tough fascia lining in the leg and cause pain.  May require surgery to give the muscle more space to expand into.  Most lower leg pain is due to shin splints, only rarely due to compartment syndrome.

Pronunciation: ex-er-shun-al com-part-ment sin-drome • (noun)

Also Known As: ECS

Examples: Nancy's leg pain was due to exertional compartment syndrome.

Common Misspellings: sindrome.
