About the Event:
The Willamette Valley Relay is designed by walkers for walkers. This 140+ mile relay takes walkers through the backroads of Oregon's beautiful Willamette Valley, starting at Champoeg State Park and winding it's way down through the historical landmarks, gardens, wildlife refuges, and museums to Alton Baker State Park in Eugene.
Enjoying the Willamette Valley Relay:
This relay is designed for all walking types -- from the casual, social walker to the competitive racewalker -- this race offers challenge, fun and an overall great time for all who participate. Van decorations, crazy team names, challenges and general fun will be hallmarks of this event.

July 14-15, 2006 will be the third annual event.
Location:
The relay kicks off in Champoeg State Park, Oregon, along the Willamette River just south of the Portland area, and proceeds 140+ miles along the backroads through farming country, celebrating the scenic and historic Willamette Valley. The relay ends in Alton Baker State Park, Eugene, Oregon.
Registration:
Entry fee is $725 for teams of 8-12 walkers. A percentage of the fee will go to Legacy Health Systems Stroke Prevention Program, and teams may donate an additional amount. Teams must cover the costs of transportation (van rental and gas) and supply their own food and drink. Teams are made up of friends, family, colleagues from work, school, church, etc. The relay offers something for everyone, with awards in multiple categories of participation.
Willamette Valley Relay
Format:
Each team provides 1-2 vehicles to transport the team. Most teams will use 2 vans with 6 walkers in each. The walkers take turns walking designated legs of the relay, handing off at exchange points every 4-7 miles. Each walker will walk at least two legs. Walking continues through the night to finish on the second day. Each team provides their own food, drink, vehicles, gas, etc. and must provide on-course volunteers to staff the race.
Awards:
Wonders of Walking Willamette Valley Relay acknowledges walkers of all types -- this is reflected in the many award categories. See the registration form for a listing of current award categories. Additional categories are being added for all divisions, so visit the site for updates as the event evolves.

The Willamette Valley Relay is sure to be a great experience for walkers of all kinds. Many walking teams in Oregon have become addicted to the relay format, and this is a chance to enjoy a pure walking relay. While some teams will compete for speed, other teams will just enjoy the challenge and camaraderie of the event. No matter what your motivation - competition, fun, exercise or simply seeing new sights and setting new goals -- enjoy the Willamette Valley Relay.
