I am not a slave to whole foods or natural foods, but having taken up the South Beach Diet principles I am now more aware of what is in my snacks. The BG Bar's ingredient list leaves you with a very good feeling - it uses natural fruit concentrates, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains, plus its namesake Super Blue Green® Algae. It contains no chemical additives, dairy, or gluten and is low in sodium. The result is a satisfying, surprisingly tasty bar. The consistency is exactly what I like when on a long walk - much like a Clif bar - soft enough so I won't choke when eating and walking, but also with the nuts and seeds providing some nice texture. It isn't crumbly. For those on various diet plans, this bar fits the profile for an exercise energy snack very nicely. It has 260 calories with a good mix of complex and simple sugars - good for walkers who need both an immediate energy burst and a sustained one. It provides 10 grams of protein, 7 grams fiber of the 29 grams carbohydrate, and 11 grams fat. Nutritionally, it provides omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and a variety of plant micronutrients from the whole food ingredients. But it is low on many vitamins, so should be used in conjunction with a balanced diet rather than as a meal replacement.
