Research says walking poles help you burn more calories while feeling less exertion. The Exel company spread Nordic Walking - walking with two walking poles - throughout Europe as a fitness activity. Tom Rutlin of Exerstrider has been the evangelist in the USA with his Exerstrider technique and poles, with only mild success. Another player is Leki, selling hiking and trekking poles worldwide as well as some exercise models.

All of the companies make good poles and are passionate about their benefits. Now they have realized it is better to join forces in the International Nordic Walking Association (INWA) to promote walking with poles and to train coaches to spread the sport.

Exel discovered the best way to promote Nordic Walking was to organize groups through community fitness centers and sports clubs and train the group how to use the poles correctly. This overcomes the shyness factor of being the only person on the street or trail who uses walking poles. It also helps the walkers get the full benefit of the poles rather than using them incorrectly.

The INWA provides education programs and Master Coaches to train the Master Trainers in each of its member organizations. They then train Nordic Walking instructors. Through this they hope to spread walking poles throughout the world.

While the Exerstriding technique varies from the Nordic Walking technique, Tom Rutlin has decided to join forces with the INWA to conquer the world for walking poles.
