Fast Food Defended

Report Says It's Not What's Making U.S. Fat

Is it the fast food making us fat? A study commissioned by the United States Chamber of Commerce says no, placing the blame instead on increasing lack of exercise and more snacking. "Burger, Fries and Lawyers: The Beef Behind Obesity Lawsuits" by Todd G. Buchholz and nutrition researcher Ruth Kava is the food industry's response to planned lawsuits against fast food chains similar to the tobacco lawsuits.

The defense is that just because fast food has been popular in the past 30 years and over half of adult Americans have become obese in that time - that does not prove cause and effect. Fast food chains don't hide the nutritional value of their food - they readily provide nutrition brochures at restaurants and have full information on their web sites. Subway in fact prints their low fat options on their napkins. Unlike nicotine, high calorie/high fat foods are not chemically addictive. Nobody has been seen going into withdrawal shakes when unable to bolt down a Big Mac.

Customers need to take personal responsibility for their food choices - resisting the Super Size meal and the Full Meal Deal in order to not overeat. The Center For Science in the Public Interest suggests printing the calorie and fat content right on the menu boards.

What Then Is Making Us Fat?

The study cites complex factors. Americans are eating an average of 200 more calories per day while getting less physical activity. More calories come from increased snacking - so perhaps it is the vending machines and the grande lattes that are adding to our waistlines? For children, especially, lack of exercise is the chief culprit in obesity. Food is also relatively less expensive, the prices having held firm or gone down while our incomes have increased.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest countered that the report ignores the effects of eating fast food every day and how children consume twice as many calories in a fast food meal as they do in a home meal.

Making the Best Choice for Fast Food

At any fast food chain, there are lower calorie and lower fat choices you can make. Subway is a good choice if you want to have the best choices laid out for you, as they use their low fat and low calorie sandwiches as a selling point the way other chains use Super Size meals.
