Bad Knees - How to Pump Up My Workout?

Q: I have bad knees and can't seem to walk fast enough to increase my heart rate and burn more calories. What should I do?

A: The first step is to work on your walking form - posture and proper arm motion. For many people, that will increase your speed and heart rate dramatically.

See How to Walk Faster for a step-by-step on walking fast.

If using proper form doesn't speed you up or increase your heart rate, then using walking poles can both increase your heart rate and protect your knees, while not making you feel like you are working any harder.

Itchy Legs

Q: Last night I got on the treadmill and began my routine. By mile 2 of walking the top of my thighs itched so bad that I couldn't walk, itch and keep balance all at the same time! I had to stop - it hurt so bad!!!! What causes this and what can I do to prevent it?

A: Itchy leg syndromeis one of the Sensitive SubjectsI cover. Read the article on it and consult with your medical provider for more information. It can be one of two forms of exercise allergy, or it may be a reaction to fabric, soap, etc. - the Itchy Pants syndrome.
