In 2001, more than 26,000 women and men participated in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day series. They were people of all ages and physical fitness levels. The walkers walk their own pace, an average of 20 miles a day for three days.
An army of 500 volunteer crew supports the walkers with catered hot meals, gear transport, water and snack stops, hot showers, and comprehensive medical services. They stop for the night at the 3-Day's "Mobile City" of tents supplied for the event, with showers, the evening meal, entertainment and camaraderie under the stars.
To participate, every 2002 walker commits to raising a minimum of $1,900 (the average funds raised to date is over $3,000 per walker). Upon registering for the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day, each walker is assigned a walker coach to help in all aspects of training and fundraising, and clinics, meetings, training sessions and mailings provide ongoing support. Walkers who live outside the area of the event are kept in touch by mail, email, and phone consultations.
Those who want to participate as a crew member instead of a walker are also welcome to join.
