Over 2000 walkers circled the island of Manhattan and raised over $1 million dollars for the cause at the 2003 New York City Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Sept. 21-22. I was one of the walkers.

This was one of my favorite walking experiences - ever. I hope that the Avon Walk organizers will continue this route in coming years. My previous experience with the Avon walks has been to walk their 3-Day Walks in DC and Seattle, and to crew the Seattle walk and crew the 2003 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2-day walk in Portland, Oregon. What made this event a favorite was the route - it is momentous to circle Manhattan. The trail was also mostly uncrowded so you could walk your own pace. The scenery was always interesting - and in the case of Ground Zero and the skyline - emotional.

As usual at Avon Walks, the support for the walkers was superb with water, sports drink, snacks, and oodles of porta-johns every couple of miles.

Come see the event through my photo gallery and story. Consider registering for this event or one of the other Avon Walks for Breast Cancer, or for the Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day Walks.
