Airline luggage and security restrictions can make it a challenge to fly with your hiking stick or walking poles. Policies vary, and while you may be able to take them on board a plane as a personal item at one airport/airline, they may need to go into checked luggage at the next airport/airline.
I don't like inciting any questions by airport security officials, so I only pack poles that will fit into my checked luggage. But for those who prefer wood, Brazos Walking Sticks has developed the Traveler's Stick. It is a sturdy oak stick that disassembles into three sections for a maximum length of 19 inches. That should fit into many packs and luggage bags. They also have a nice leather case you can buy to carry it in. It's handmade in the USA and can be engraved. Hmm, might be a nice Father's Day gift idea for the trekking dad.
Last year, I traveled to Israel for the Mt. Gilboa Two-Day Walk and I knew I would need my trekking poles. I had to take along a larger suitcase because my trip included business meetings as well as the hiking. It was no problem fitting my Leki trekking poles inside the suitcase after telescoping them down to their smallest length.
However you choose to carry your sticks, be aware that something long and pointy can cause concern. You don't want drama like my friend Will encountered when his tripod got mistaken for a rifle as he was out walking. Hmm, I guess that's another way that walking can land you in jail.
