Wordless Wednesday - Jumping Off a Perfectly Good Alp

Paragliding in the Alps

Our Adventure Travel Guide rates the 5 Best Swiss Day Hikes. I've hiked two of them and have photo galleries of the Faulhornweg to Bachalpsee and the hike between Lauterbrunnen and Mürren. On Faulhornweg hike, I was enchanted by the paragliders who sailed the thermals like eagles. Two days later, I joined them and took a tandem paraglide flight. That was one of the best half hours of my life. Actually, there is no jumping involved. You just walk forward and the air catches your canopy and away you soar, just like a bird. It's silent and spectacular. No scary free fall - unless you really do it wrong! Here is a YouTube video that I believe includes my pilot, Dino on a jump from the same location, and this video where the pilot takes the passenger into the exciting spiral (my reaction was similar!).

This is yet another sport I will never try. I’ll stay on terra firma, thankyouverymuch. Great photo, though!
