Walking Away from Memory Problems

Tuesday September 9, 2008
Research continues to show that regular exercise such as walking can help keep the brain working better as you age. The most recent study showed improved memory scores for people with mild cognitive impairment who walked for an hour, three times a week. I find Alzheimer's Disease and dementia to be heartbreaking disorders. The good news is that I have many walking friends who I've been walking with for 15 or more years. Now in their late 70's, 80's or bumping up on 90, they are still out walking and still a pleasure to share time chatting with. It gives me pleasure to think that the walking has kept their brains and bodies healthy through all of these years. It gives me hope for a healthier life past retirement.

The Alzheimer's Association hosts Memory Walks in the fall in 600 communities. How great is it that the walk may actually help delay onset of the disorder? Join in to support those with the disorder, and take along your loved ones so you can show them one way to reduce their risks.
