Walking and the Big O

Sunday September 7, 2008
And now for the weird walking news. Those who don't care to read about sexuality research should stop reading this post right here. A paper published in a reputable journal by trained sexologists said they could predict a woman's orgasmic history from the way she walked. It was a very small study of only 16 Belgian university women. But they claim that the sum of stride length and vertebral rotation predicted the likelihood of a woman of having experienced vaginal orgasm. Longer stride and more hip rotation meant more satisfaction. Again, with the tiny number of women in the study, I have difficulty seeing how their measurements were statistically significant. They inferred stride length and vertebral rotation from videotape of the women walking down the street.

From this tiny number of women studied, they claim 81% accuracy in their predictions. They speculate that women with the longer strides and hip rotation have a "gait that comprises fluidity, energy, sensuality, freedom, and absence of both flaccid and locked muscles." Is this cause or effect? I can see the logic in that if you have some sort of muscle/nerve dysfunction in your pelvic area, it might have implications for sexual pleasure. Beyond that, the researchers went on to speculate that women with sexual dysfunction should learn to walk right as part of their therapy. Hat tip to Dr. Dean Edell's radio show. Dr. Dean commented on the focus on the type of orgasm, which he and many other people think is basically an outdated myth left over from Freud.

I am all in favor of learning to walk right, but this seems like a weak connection. But, hey, whatever gets you out walking and learning good walking posture and stride! And for men, several studies have concluded that regular exercise reduces risk for erectile dysfunction. Is this good exercise motivation for you and the one you love?
