BPA Water Bottles Safe Says FDA Draft Report

Saturday August 16, 2008
Nalgene BPA-free water bottleThe FDA draft report on bisphenol A (BPA) says it is still acceptable in food containers, such as some clear hard water bottles.

While many manufacturers have switched to BPA-free water bottles and baby bottles, there is also BPA in the epoxy liners of many canned foods. The FDA report says that the level of exposure is tiny, and animal testing showed no observable effects for 2,000 to 27,000 times the usual daily exposure, for infants and adults respectively. This is good news, because you can easily switch to a BPA-free bottle, but ending exposure through canned foods is tougher to achieve. The controversy won't end, as those who fear BPA won't end the fight. I applaud them for lobbying to keep us all a little bit safer, but there are other threats I'd rather expend my energy on, like salmonella in my salsa and guacamole. I suppose they will always remain a danger to my waistline.
