The View from the Treadmill

Wednesday July 16, 2008
I get email every few months asking about where to find treadmill walking videos. These come in two flavors. First, there are walking videos that you follow along for a cardio workout. The instructor cues you change the pace, incline, or add dumbbells or fancy steps. I just watched Walking Strong by FitbyTracey. I thought it was a very good workout video. I enjoyed Tracey and the banter she had with her sister and an assistant. Each showed a variation of the workout, including one just marching in place.

The other genre is to produce a virtual walk through lovely scenery. Your treadmill workout takes you to the Swiss Alps, the charming English Cotswolds, or lush Maui. For many years I've linked to just one producer of this sort of video, but now I've found a second producer with new destinations, TreadmillWalks.com.

Question: Is there a TV show you watch for treadmill scenery? I think Sunrise Earth would be a great scenic video to watch as you treadmill. You can suggest your favorites in the Comments. My own virtual trek this time of year is to watch the cyclists on the Tour de France - mountains, quaint French villages, and men in spandex!

Just watch any exiting show, it gets your mind off how long you’ve been walking. Also watch a show on dieting or weight control.

I usually watch Ellen, the local news or CNN. They don’t have a very good selection of channels at my gym so most times I listen to my mp3 player.

I haven’t personally tried it yet, but listening to books on tape would be motivating for me. Also considered buying DVD’s for exercise use only; i.e., watching only when I’m on the treadmill.

My wife and I have two treadmills, so before we go to work in the morning we watch the news or a good movie.

Whether it’s for treadmill entertainment or background visuals and music, I just love the outdoorsy DVDs photos/art/music my friends, Cheryl and Larry produce. Of course I carry them on my website. They just added some gorgeous National Park scenery. Liz

Don’t forget my walking videos from Starling Fitness. Only ambient sound and walking along trails, beaches and parks.
