Walking in Makeup?

Saturday June 28, 2008
I never go to work without wearing eyeliner and eyeshadow, but if it's a walking day I usually don't bother. It doesn't make sense to me to put on makeup that will just get smudged by sweat or rain, or hidden behind sunglasses.

On our recent walks in the Columbia River Gorge, I noticed that two of my female walking buddies were wearing eye makeup and lipstick. I can understand the lipstick. The Gorge is famous for its wind, and lipstick will prevent chapped lips just like Chapstick. In the past, women have told me they wear their foundation instead of sunscreen, as it has sunscreen in it. I suppose if you have put on the foundation and the lipstick, you figure you may as well put on the eye makeup.

Since I mop my face often when walking to remove sweat or rain, or even splash my face with water to cool off, I just can't see wearing foundation when I walk. Instead, I use a moisturizer that includes sunscreen or apply a good quality sunscreen. Our Beauty Guide has tips on mascara that survives sweat and makeup tips for hot weather.

If you wear makeup when you walk, why? Is it just habit?

When I was much younger I thought foundation was a must. I ruined a lot of collars on hot days, and that stuff hurts if it gets in your eyes. Now, I just use good skin care products and a slow, light self-tanner mixed with a daily moisturizer.

I have blonde eyelashes and look 1/2 drugged without mascara, so that’s a must! If it’s waterproof, the sweat won’t be a problem. Once, maybe 20 years ago, I dyed my eyelashes, but it gave me itchy eyes. I’m thinking about trying again with a hypoallergenic brand of dye, at home. Bought the kit but haven’t done it yet. :)

Lipstick–I feel naked and chapped without it. You’re right, it has a dual function–color and moisture.

I wear makeup to walk, mostly for convenience’s sake…I walk after work, and I don’t feel like wasting time washing off my mascara and lipstick (I don’t wear foundation) before I set off…Maybe the folks you see have similarly hectic schedules, and fit their walks in where they can.
That being said, Like Jennifer, I feel naked without lipstick, and I don’t leave the house without it!

When I would leave work and go walking, I would have my full makeup on. I didn’t see any reason to stop and wash it off. Now that I am retired, I just put my shoes on and go. Sunglasses cover the eyes, and a good lip balm with tint is about all I wear in the makeup department!

I’d rather not wear makeup that’s going to sweat off and burn ny eyes. But each to their own.

Most all of my fitness walks occur first thing in the morning, before going to work. So, no! If, however, I walk later in the day, I go with powder (foundation if it’s already on for some other reason) & mascara. Don’t want to clog up those pores! At any rate, my face doesn’t sweat, so no wiping involved. Full-on makeup? That’s understandable I guess, but crazy!

Like the others, if I’m walking later in the day and have some on, I don’t take it off. (I don’t wear much to begin iwth.) But if I’m walking in the morning, or doing a race, I don’t put makeup on. It’s one of the reasons I tend to wear sunglasses during races - the older I get the more naked my eyes look without at least a little mascara.

My fitness walks are 1st thing in the morning BEFORE I do anything else or let anything else get in the way of my commitment to me. Sunscreen and tinted lip gloss with sunglasses are for me. But if it is a walk in the nearby park later in the day, socializing might occur and then it’s tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, long lasting mascara and lip stick. Bobbi Brown works very well for me and doesn’t smudge. Pricey, but I find it worh it.

I usually walk first thing in the morning and I always wear a quick “stick” foundation with sunscreen and lipstick and also pencil in my eyebrows. If it is really sunny out, I will also apply additional sunscreen. I live in Arizona!

I walk in makeup, I wear it to the gym. Actually I wear makeup all the time. Makeup for me is a way of feeling ready to greet the world at my best. I walk with a more confident stride, I smile more at people.
I’m not a person who you would say (needs makeup) I just enjoy the way it makes me feel. In all my years, I have never had my makeup run down my face or had a bad experience wearing it. Just for the fun of it I would say try it. When I feel like I look good, I feel happier, even if its just going to the mini-mart! What ever works to make you feel good is what counts.

(9) Bev says:

No I do not wear makeup when I walk. If I wear makeup when I walk or do any type of exercise that makes my face sweat, within a couple of day my face is broken out. So I find at my age (62- Yes, I am proof your face can still break out even at an advanced age.)vain is gone and walking and makeup just don’t mix. The need to walk and maintain a clear complection out weighs the need for glam while walking.

I wear lipstick and tinted moisturizer– both provide at least 15 SPF! With all the makeup that has sunscreen in it now, it’s easy to find a product that is low-maintenance and protective.

I love being able to work out or take a shower and my makeup stays on. Senegence is all sweat and waterproof!
