I got this note from a reader, "I've started walking every night for fitness and weight loss and tonight my shins hurt so bad after one 20-minute mile I had to stop. I typed in "shins hurt walking" or something like that on Google and saw your page. You already know the answer, my stride was too long and too forward. I read your guide and went back to the park and walked 3 more miles, and my legs feel great!"
Shin splints are that terrible pain you get when you change something about your walking. Beginners very often feel them because the shins only get a workout when walking. If you overstride as the reader above you also are stressing your shins. A new pair of shoes gave me shin pain last week on their first use.
