Carnival of the Walkers #51

Monday June 26, 2006
Weekly round-up of walking blogs, news, and fun items.
  • Walking With Weights is a Bad Idea: I've said this for years, and the DiscoverWalking blog agrees. Walking with weights, either hand weights or ankle weights, simply risks problems developing that will keep you from further walking or exercise.
  • When Blisters Go Bad: The Happy Feet blog has a very unhappy story about rare cases of toxic shock syndrome from festering blisters. For many of us distance walker, blisters are just an annoying part of the training. But do take care and know the warning signs of a blister going bad.
  • Ancient Walking Pilgrimage: If you want to clear your head, go for a walk. For a really clear head, try walking anywhere from 60 to 1,200 miles and ending up at a church in the town of Santiago, Spain. You'll be in good company: tens of thousands make this pilgrimage to Santiago every year.
  • Perils for Pedestrians: Tuesday, June 27, DISH Network will show Episode 64 of "Perils For Pedestrians". Contents of Episode 64:
The Safe Passages program for school children in Draper, Utah. Research on cell phones and driving distractions at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Separate trails for pedestrians and bicyclists in congested areas of Denver, Colorado. The Neighborhood Pace Car program in Boise, Idaho.
