Carnival of the Walkers #25

Saturday December 17, 2005
Walktopia: Welcome to a new walking blog, Walktopia. Their mission? "We started Walktopia to provide something we thought was missing: walk appreciation. We're passionate about (a) adding some spice to the current concept of walking and (b) finding linkages between dispersed elements of the walk universe." One way they plan to do that is the Walkies (tm) Awards. Stop by and make some nominations!
Fat Man Walking Update: Steve Vaught, the "Fat Man Walking" has made it to Missouri, lost at least 80 pounds, and is featured in this news story from KY3 News. As the cameras arrived for a scheduled interview, the hotel manager decided to display the sort of prejudice Steve is walking to eliminate. But Steve says it was all a spiritual growth experience for him. Steve will be flying home for the holidays, then back on the road in 2006.
Can You Walk Off Your Saddle Bags? The 3-4-5 Fitness blog explores the age old question of why women have thunder thighs and what you can do about it.
Pedicures for Men: You may not have thought of this gift idea for the guys, but according the Happy Feet blog, pedicures for men are a big trend. My dad always had a devil of a time with ingrown toenails, and my husband's feet are a nightmare. A nice spa pedicure to sand off the calluses and get the nails in order can be a big relief for the guys. And most day spas are unisex enough for even the macho types.
Avoiding Walking Pole Drag: The Nordic Walking News blog has tips and photos about using your walking poles correctly, especially if you find yourself dragging them forward.
What to Drink: The Really Useful Fitness blog has the skinny on what to drink and what not to drink. I just got back from a gambling excursion to Las Vegas and I highly recommend "virgin" Bloody Marys if you want a party drink. They are very tasty, you can sip them for quite awhile, and are packed with vitamins and few calories. Nobody will try to force a higher calorie drink into your hand while you sip your Mary. The drawback? They are salty, which I like, but won't work for those reducing sodium.
Beyond the Anti-Oxidant Hype: The Sports Geezer blog dives into the controversy on whether anti-oxidants are more hype than health. His conclusion? Tomatoes are probably good for you anyway, so I'm justified with my virgin Bloody Marys.
Heart Rate TV Controller: Laura Moncur of the Starling Fitness blog reviews the Entertrainer gizmo that controls your TV by your heart rate. No TV for you unless you keep your heart rate up!
