When Blister Tips Go Wrong

Wednesday June 8, 2005
Bobbi Hogan thought she would try something new on marathon day to prevent blisters....Wrong! Different methods work for different people, and you have to try my 7 Blister Strategies out on your long training walks, not on race day.

"Do not...I repeat...do not do anything different the day of the race that you wern't doing in training for the event. This was the advice from one of my coaches and I listened...almost! The night before the event I came up with a idea that to me it sounded completely logical. I decided to use a super-strong anti-perspirant on the bottom of my feet. My thinking was that wet feet blister and if my feet didn't sweat I would eliminate any possibility of forming blisters. What I got was hot burning feet instead! This was not problem I had encountered during my training unlike my friend who had a history of hot feet. (She used the deodorant also) The fact that her feet were hot and burning didn't surprise either of us. We made stops at almost every medical aid station for vaseline and band-aids and ended up being taken out of the Marathon by a Doctor at the15 mile mark. It wasn't until later that night that the 'light' went on in my brain.Perspiration is the bodies way of cooling itself down. The deodorant prevented this process; hence the hot feet. The lesson here is...don't try ANYTHING new right before or during the race!
